How to choose print sizes for your photos

Picking a print size is easier when you start from where the photo will live and how it was taken. This guide walks through three decisions and one worked example.

Step one: decide where the print will hang — FotaniFotani · Travel

Step one: decide where the print will hang

Begin with the destination, not the file. A print for a desk or shelf usually works well at 4x6 or 5x7 inches, while a hallway or living room wall tends to call for 8x10, 11x14 or larger. Think about viewing distance too: the farther away someone stands, the larger the image can be without losing impact. Measure the wall space or frame you plan to use, leave breathing room around the edges, and note whether the piece will stand alone or join a group of frames. Writing the intended spot down prevents ordering a size that feels lost.

Step two: match the shape of the photo

Different cameras produce different proportions, and a print size must respect them. Many phone photos are close to 4:3, while many dedicated cameras produce 3:2, so a standard 8x10 print will crop part of the image. Open the photo and check what sits near the edges, such as heads, horizons or text. If cropping would cut something important, choose a size that fits the original shape, like 4x6 or 8x12, or plan on a mat that adds margin. Previewing the crop before ordering is the simplest way to avoid disappointment when the print arrives.

Step three: check resolution against size

Larger prints need more detail. As a rough guide, aim for around 150 to 300 pixels per inch of print size, with the higher end for sharp, close viewing. Divide the pixel width of your photo by the target width in inches to see where you land. A file that looks fine on a screen may soften when enlarged, so favor a smaller print for low-resolution images, or choose a textured paper that forgives softness. Reviewing the order preview at full zoom helps you spot blur before committing to a bigger and costlier size.
